Lot 2488
Great Britain. Pattern mule halfpenny, 1790. P-1023 but a mule reverse, the famous "nude Britannia" harkening back to Queen Anne's days. This is probably a model for the engraver, for the reverse is the undressed version of the finished obverse. A marvelous specimen, too: Superb Gem bronzed Proof, medium chocolate brown surfaces with some reflectivity and light iridescence. Exceedingly rare!. NGC graded Proof 66 Brown.

Lot 2491
Great Britain. Pattern copper Halfpenny, 1795. George III. P-1051. So-called Light Bronzed finish. Very scarce. Classic Kuchler design with a smallish, cameo head of the king inside the soon-to-be-familiar raised wide rim, decorated with an incuse legend including "SOHO" proudly displayed beneath the bust. On the back, a youngish looking Britannia seated on a bare globe holding shield and spear, pointing west with an outreached arm. She sits within another wide rim, fashioned at its bottom into a cartouche suggestive of a ship's prow. A gorgeous specimen! Glowing fields with reflective, bright blue iridescence. The die-work is a joy to study on these pieces, and one could hardly wish for a finer coin to stare at! NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.

Lot 2502
Great Britain. Pattern copper Farthing, 1798. George III. P-1204. Early Soho issue. Engraved by Kuchler. Very scarce. The classic predecessor to the issued currency coin of 1799, which appeared without the large raised border used on the penny and twopence coins, the legends incuse thereon, on both sides on this pattern. NGC grade seems a bit conservative as the surfaces are very choice indeed, a lovely medium brown with ancient blue iridescence inside the incuse letters and digits and also surrounding the portrait and Britannia and running along the inner circles' rims. This to the cataloguer enhances the eye appeal of this beauty! NGC graded Proof 63 Brown.

Great Britain. Penny, 1806. S.3780; KM-663. George III. No incuse curl. Much original luster. In many ways the currency 1806 copper pennies are more difficult to obtain in mint state than the proofs and patterns of this period. Great Britain. Pattern "Garter" silver Crown, 1804. George III. ESC-181. Rare. Bank of England "emergency" issue pattern, not used in subsequent currency issues: the central reverse here shows a smaller Garter circle and the Hanover shield within, whereas the adopted coinage ended up with a wider and longer Garter encircling a seated Britannia. This style enjoys an elegant presence, in effect a jumbo cameo surrounded by a broad band of deep denticles. On the reverse, the Garter is frosted, in relief against the mirror fields, again enjoying a broad band of denticles surrounding it. Lots of fine hairlines but brilliant with pleasing eye-appeal. Great Britain. Pattern silver Webb & Mills Crown (1820). ESC-221; KM-PnB80. George III. Plain edge. Marble-like portrait of the king facing right. Crowther points out that the reverse emblems are the English rose, Irish shamrock, Hanover horse and Scots thistle, with a tiny St George garter in the center. Linecar and Stone explain that Thomas Webb designed the portrait, George Mills the distinctive cruciform reverse, as commissioned by James Mudie, famous for his medals commemorating British victories. Scarce, but never popular, perhaps this curious piece deserves some re-consideration as a tribute to a dying king, for it must have been made just as George III was drawing his last breaths. Also, if you really want an example of this inexpensive pattern, perhaps this is the piece to bid for! Unlike the typical scruffy one that hits the market, here indeed is a superb and stunningly toned specimen, shimmering in bluish green and gold iridescence. This coin indeed must make all the others unexciting! NGC graded Proof 64.
